Reasons for the popularity of the modern hero are presented with a psychoanalytic orientation. Close attention is given to the familiar case of James Bond. Various bases are offered for the readers' identification with the hero; erotic and aggressive features of the writing and imagery are illustrated; the origin and character of our hero are related to the classic study of Otto Rank; the adventures of our hero are fitted to the monomyth of Joseph Campbell.
