Abstract
This paper deals with some of the problems of the psychiatrist working within an institutional setting. Reference is made to the distinction between psychiatric administrators and administrative therapists, and the hypothesis is put forward that a degree of management training is as necessary for the latter as it is for the former. Examples are given of some of the management problems that an administrative therapist might have to deal with and suggestions are made as to how a suitable course in middle management for psychiatrists might be designed and implemented.
