A study of the two-year intake of psychiatric referrals to a psychiatric unit attached to a children's reception centre. A total of 266 children were evaluated in terms of diagnosis, age, school, family background, treatment and placement. Certain patterns of behaviour in relation to defined social background patterns were shown to be of significance. Ways of improving treatment and management programmes, and other preventive measures were discussed.
