Abstract
The goal of this theme issue is to reacquaint the educational research community with theory and research in expertise. Several recent, alternative perspectives on expertise that hold promise for educational theory and practice are considered in light of earlier generations of expert/novice investigations. Several common goals and shared themes within highlighted articles are described, and the contributions of a concluding commentary are overviewed.
