Abstract
The computer, the most significant technological advance for handling information, is rapidly becoming an important tool for the literate person. The book, an equally significant device for thinking and communication, has long been the focus of formal instruction. The paper explores the role of the school in promoting book literacy and inquires into the lessons to be learned from the long history of reading instruction.
