Abstract
A social cognitive developmental model is described, integrating a Piagetian developmental model and Flavell’s processing model, to describe three aspects of development: a stage sequence, utilization processes, and acquisition processes. The utility of the model was tested in two studies. Each involved a naturalistic education program, one at the sixth-grade and one at the first-grade levels. The results demonstrate that it is possible to increase children’s social cognitive abilities instructionally. The model provides specific guidelines for structuring such educational programs.
