Abstract
The bacterial flora of 47 maxillary sinuses was examined. The growth of anaerobic germs in 23 specimens of chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses was compared to 16 specimens of normal maxillary sinuses. Anaerobic growth was registered in 56.5% of chronically inflamed as well as in 43.7% of healthy sinuses. Statistically this is no significant difference. As anaerobic bacteria should not preponderate and turn pathogenic, the aim of treatment in chronic sinusitis should be the restitution of drainage and ventilation via the physiological pathways.
