Contributions to the History of Psychology: CIX. Note on an Oral History of C. Kermit Phelps: An 89-Year-Old African American Clinical Psychologist

Abstract

During late 1996 and early 1997, the authors conducted four structured interviews with C. Kermit Phelps, an 89-year-old black psychologist who spent his professional career at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Interview topics cover Dr. Phelps' personal and professional history, the evolution of clinical psychology and issues surrounding minorities in the profession of psychology. This brief article provides an overview of some findings as a comprehensive account of the interviews will require considerable time to prepare.
