Abstract
Research and publication and teaching are among the criteria used for considering academics for promotion at institutions of higher education. 300 faculty at the University of Transkei were asked to indicate which one of the two was more important for promotion. While some indicated that teaching was more important, others indicated that both should be considered, implying perhaps they were equally important. Such results are contrary to the common practice of highly valuing research and publication for purposes of promotion in many institutions of higher education.
