Dillon in 1981 argued that the presence of a colon in the title of an article is an indicator of scholarship. The present study extended this work by examining the relationship between use of colons and journal status. Unfortunately, Dillon's hypothesis provided little guidance in predicting a likely direction. When 7 journals from industrial relations were examined between 1980 and 1991, a significant inverse association was noted for use of colons in titles and journal status.
