Astin's 1984 theory of student development and Schutz's FIRO theory provided the basis for an inquiry into the interpersonal dimension of family background for 813 students entering UC Santa Cruz in the Fall of 1984. Analysis of data from Schutz's Perception of Parents and the American Council of Education's Freshman Survey showed early parental treatment to be a distinct factor, indicating the potential usefulness of this as a pretest measure for further research on students' process of adjustment to the college environment.
