This study is based on the hypothesis that “jiritsu” comprises two major components, namely, “integrated dependence” and “independence.” The aim is to examine the components of jiritsu of young Japanese women and establish a Jiritsu Scale. Responses to a 49-item questionnaire administered to 430 college women were factor analyzed. The hypothesized components were successfully obtained. The Jiritsu Scale was created with two factors, one containing 19 items and the other 14.
