The utility of Howarth's μ index for differentiating state and trait scales was examined given the various publications on this index since 1978. It is tentatively concluded that the index does differentiate state and trait scales; however, several concerns still need to be addressed. For example, the distribution of μ needs to be determined, along with tests of significance and more examples of the application of the index need to be reported in the open literature.
