Abstract
Questionnaire data pertaining to belief in the supernatural collected in 1987 (N = 918) were compared to similar data collected in 1977 (N = 696), using the same questionnaire. Analysis showed over-all a significant drop in supernatural belief scores from the first to the second sample—decades 1977 to 1987. Women showed higher acceptance than men, and older subjects had lower supernatural belief scores than did college and young adult subjects. In general, acceptance of religious values increased along with belief in faith healing. Results are discussed in relation to the recent shift in values in a conservative direction.
