Grading on the curve is described and solved for, where the a priori probabilities of the several letter grades are applied to the normally distributed population, not directly to the particular sample under consideration. (It is suggested that the conventional treatment of this problem fails properly to distinguish a population from a sample.) The relationship of this solution to that of Ebel (1965) is discussed.
