Abstract
This study examined differences among participants in group discussions with appointed leaders or no designated leaders. Analysis indicated that, regardless of condition, there was a positive correlation between number of conforming statements and Wanted Control, Expressed Control, Wanted Affection, and Expressed Affection. Members of groups with appointed leaders made more conforming statements than members of groups with no designated leader. The results are interpreted in terms of ingratiation as a strategy for emergence of leadership.
