Abstract
27 male and 27 female undergraduates currently coping well with stressful life events were compared on each subscale of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory with a group (20 women and 12 men) coping poorly. Poor copers scored higher on the following subscales, Indirect, Guilt, Resentment, Suspiciousness and Total Score. No differences occurred for the expressive subscales, Assault and Verbal. Efficient coping is associated with reacting to stress with a minimum of hostility either expressed or suppressed.
