The Environmental Check List, a 140-item adjective check list developed to measure geographical environments, is presented. The list was developed from 304 open-ended descriptions, and its utility illustrated by three studies: (1) a pre-post study over 1 yr. of 108 newcomers to Tucson, AZ; (2) a 5-yr. study of initial reaction to a desert environment as related to subsequent mobility; and (3) a comparison of responses to the check list and to the Environmental Response Inventory.
