After a 2-min. wait in a room described as the laboratory assistant's office, memory of 22 undergraduates for items in the office was tested. Previous ratings of the saliency of items predicted retrieval and errors. The results were discussed in terms of the operation of schemata as described by Bartlett in 1932.
