Abstract
Matina Horner's (1968) original research on the motive to avoid success embraced within the achievement-orientation literature gathered momentum as a viable personality construct. However, an overwhelming amount of this research has focussed predominantly on white women with varying emphasis on men. A computer search was performed to assess the limited number of articles and empirical studies published on the fear of success as it relates specifically to black women. The search yielded 20 references, of which five are unpublished manuscripts, and spanned a 12-yr. period from 1970 to 1982.
