Abstract
The scoring systems for androgyny proposed by Strahan, by Kalin, and by Bryan, Coleman, and Ganong are assessed as potential supplements to main effect terms for masculinity and femininity in regression analysis. Strahan's androgyny value, the sum of M and F, is completely redundant with the two main effect terms and would have no incremental value. The androgyny scores suggested by Kalin and by Bryan, et al. would each provide some general indication of the effect of balance between M and F scores. However, a more interpretable indicator of “balance androgyny” is the conventional (M × F) multiplicative interaction term.
