Abstract
“Negotiating Latitude” is a key indicator in the vertical dyad linkage approach to leadership. Within- and between-groups analysis is a general methodology to test rival formulations of leadership. In this paper results are presented from applying this approach on the negotiating latitude scale using the data originally reported by Dansereau, Graen, and Haga who described an effect of vertical dyad linkage in 1975. The reanalysis raises questions about the negotiating latitude scale because the results are more compatible with an inference of ambiguous data rather than with an average leadership style or a vertical dyad-linkage approach to leadership.
