This study explored a common myth that circulates through institutions, namely, that the residents are better informed than the staff. Knowledge of rumor patterns among retarded residents is virtually nonexistent. A method was devised to study the origin, dissemination, and effectiveness of patterning of rumors by residents to assess spread of information. Data did not support an effective system of transmission of rumor among the retarded residents.
