Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between self-ratings of physical attractiveness and self-esteem for young adults with cleft lip and/or palate. 67 patients completed a Physical Attractiveness Scale and a Self-esteem Scale. The physically attractive group rated themselves higher in self-esteem than did the less attractive group of patients. Age and ratings of physical attractiveness were correlated. Younger persons had higher ratings of physical attractiveness. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in relation to sex of patient, educational attainment, or type of cleft, The lack of differences in types of cleft may be explained by improvement in techniques of plastic surgery which have reduced the likelihood of facial disfigurement.
