Abstract
Assuming that students who favor Republican presidential candidates will be more conservative and more likely to have authoritarian characteristics than Democratic students, it was hypothesized that they would tend to see their parents as having the same preferences for candidates as themselves. A random sample of 116 students at the time of the 1972 election and 133 students at the time of the 1976 election were asked about their preferences for candidates and those of their parents. In both elections the hypothesis was supported in that more students who favored Republican candidates reported their parents voting similarly than students who favored Democratic candidates.
