24 variations of rating scales were used to explore their abilities to discriminate between two printed advertisements. The variations corresponded to differences in polarity (unipolar versus bipolar), the number of response intervals (5 through 10 intervals), and physical format (horizontal versus vertical). None of the factors, alone or in interaction, significantly affected scale items' ability to discriminate between the two advertisements.
