The essay tries to illustrate differences between the traditional and the Gestalt approach to thinking by means of two simple examples from elementary geometry. Line and circle serve as paradigms. It attempts to show that the traditional type of largely “piecewise” thought operations inherent in the Euclidean-Cartesian method of describing these figures creates certain logical difficulties from the point of view of the structural type of thought operations which have been demonstrated by Gestalt theory.
