The issue of other-than-sleep differences between long and short sleep patterns is discussed. A distinction is made between short and long sleep patterns and shortened and lengthened sleep. Categories of long and short sleep are defined. Measurement problems are discussed. The available research data are discussed. It is concluded that, if there are differences, they are limited and subtle. The requirements for further research are outlined.
