71 college women completed Chesney and Tasto's (1975) Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire, the Bern Sex-role Inventory, the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, and a revised Attitudes Towards Romantic Love Scale. A low but statistically significant correlation of .28 (p < .05) between Bern Masculinity score and congestive, but not spasmodic, experience was found. Since congestive discomfort is believed to be associated with an elevation of estrogen level relative to progesterone level, the results at least raise the possibility of a correlation between these hormone levels and masculine self-concept.
