Abstract
A criterion-referenced observational instrument, the Community Living Skills Assessment Inventory, for measuring functional living skills in their ecological context necessary for successful adaptation to alternative placements in the community is described. The inventory can be used with all institutionalized mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed, multihandicapped, and other developmentally disabled individuals. Procedures for administering, scoring, and interpreting this instrument are presented. The primary purpose of the inventory is to determine the discrepancy between a handicapped individual's functional level of skill and those expected by a potentially appropriate alternative placement facility to develop training objectives which minimize these discrepancies. A variety of other uses of the inventory are discussed.
