Abstract
A Hebrew translation of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence was administered to 36 kindergarten children of advantaged Ashkenazi or European-origin in Israel and a comparable group of 27 children of Sephardi or North African origin. A series of background controls was built into the design to ensure equivalence but for subcultural membership. The Ashkenazim scored significantly higher on five of the subtests and on the Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs. Improved economic status has not modified the pattern of ethnic subgroup's differential preparation for school work.
