Abstract
Self-estimates, assessed by Osgood's Semantic Differential technique, were obtained for 96 anxious and 79 depressed patients both before and after 4 wk. of treatment with pharmacotherapy. While there were few changes in self-estimates over the course of treatment with either drug or placebo, patients rated as improved had significantly higher pretreatment potency scores than those rated unimproved. This finding was more pronounced for depressed than for anxious patients and was not affected significantly by either sex or social class.
