The replicability of the a priori four-factor structure of the Wagner and Morse (1975) sense of competence index was examined across two samples of public employees (N1 = 362, N2 = 484). Results indicate that the factor structure of the measure is highly reproducible across different samples and settings, but for only three rather than four factors. Implications are discussed.
