Abstract
The first study describes the empirical derivation of a fireman interest key for the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory and reports that in a sample of 38 firemen, the correlation of Raven's Progressive Matrices with a paired-comparisons performance rating is significantly higher for subjects scoring above than for subjects scoring below the median on the interest scale. The moderator effect of interest on the validity of the Progressive Matrices was replicated in cross-validation on a sample of 22 fireman trainees using a 6-hr. job sampling of firefighter skills as criterion. For subjects above and below the median of interest scores generated by 131 trainee applicants, the correlations of the Progressive Matrices with the criterion were significantly different. No significant racial bias was found for the moderator or predictor.
