Abstract
A multidimensional structure that can serve as a base for a systematic investigation of locus of control is presented. This structure includes three dimensions, Behavioral Outcomes, Control Ideology, and Situational Contents. Each dimension contains several factors. Five points are identified along the I-E continuum. Starting from extreme internality and moving towards extreme externality, the points are effort, ability, objective obstacles, powerful others, and chance or luck. A systematic investigation of the multidimensionality of the locus of control, based on the proposed structure, is recommended to add clarity to the research and increase its generalizability. A suggestion for the design of multidimensional instruments assessing locus of control is offered.
