The study tested the comparative consensual validity of each member of a pair of contradictory common sensical expressions concerning intimate relationships. In a survey of 720 single young adults (360 males, 360 females), roughly 70% of the males and 72% of the females endorsed “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” as a truer statement than “Out of sight, out of mind.” Theoretical and methodological implications for the study of interpersonal attraction are discussed.
