An analysis performed upon previously obtained developmental multi-trial free-recall data showed that retention of words on trial n recalled from the last 5 serial positions on trial n – 1 was significantly poorer than recall of other serial positions in a non-categorized list but not in a categorized list. Subsequent analysis suggested that this was due to higher levels of processing intrinsic to categorizable items rather than outputting strategies.
