Factors controlling predatory attack are not well understood. Research has implicated pelage-substrate contrast, movement, proximity, etc. The present study illustrates the divergence of results when all combinations of two pelage and two substrates are used in a predator-prey study. Locating a white mouse on a light-colored substrate required about 6 times as long as other color/substrate combinations.
