Abstract
Transactions of free-forming groups (entries into and exits from these groups) were sampled in a conversation lounge to test the model proposed by Coleman and James. The data supported their assumptions for groups of size two or more. As predicted, exit probabilities increased as group size increased, and entry probabilities were independent of group size. The present study also attempted to replicate Tucker and Friedman's finding that group size was inversely related to population density. No such relation was found. Population density also had no effect on probability of entry or exit.
