Abstract
The study investigated hypothesized interactive effects of two widely used mnemonic strategies, the First-letter and Descriptive-story techniques, with acquisition and recall of Concrete and Abstract words. Additionally, imagery level of peg words within the First-letter mnemonic technique was varied. Results indicated differential effects in early acquisition stages and in 24-hour recall. Specifically, the First-letter technique, with high imagery peg words, seems particularly effective for recall of Abstract words while Concrete word recall was facilitated by the Descriptive-story method. Mnemonic characteristics related to these effects were discussed.
