Cognitive complexity is seen as comprised of two components, a discriminating and an integrating structure. Theorists have tended to concentrate on one structural component or the other, often ignoring important conceptual distinctions between approaches. A concept-attainment analogue to cognitive complexity is presented to aid in analysing the components of cognitive complexity and theoretical approaches to cognitive complexity.
