Kaufman's scale of status concern, originally developed on an undergraduate sample, was administered to a general population in a county-wide survey (N = 300). The scale was judged to be homogeneous, using both the Guttman and Proctor techniques of analysis. A high negative correlation obtained between concern with status and actual socio-economic status and a positive one between concern with status and age.
