The hypothesized interactive effect of feat of appearing incompetent in the relationship between attitude similarity and interpersonal attraction was not obtained. Instead, significant main effects occurred for both male and female Ss due primarily to the stronger attraction toward dissimilar strangers by Ss with high fear of appearing incompetent than those low in such fear.
