A perceptual judgmental situation with a Crutchfield-type apparatus was used with 128 Ss to test the hypothesis that a relationship between conformity and cohesiveness appears only when conformity is seen as being instrumental to attaining a group goal. No relationship was found and results further suggested behavior contradictory to the hypothesis with the cohesiveness-conformity relationship holding when conformity was not instrumental. No relationship between cohesiveness and ambiguity appeared in affecting conformity behavior and no differences in conformity between sexes were found.
