This paper examined the progressive development of adolescents' generalized attitudes toward themselves and cigarette smokers of various ages (n = 699, grades 4 to 12). Adolescents who reported being smokers did not differ from nonsmokers in over-all self-ratings, but they had more favorable and differentiated attitudes toward adolescent and adult smokers.
