The distribution of verb tenses in written and oral productions has been used as an index of temporal orientation. To investigate whether such distribution can, indeed, be used to indicate time orientation, 81 college students were asked to write one story about an important past event, another on an important future event, and the third on an important present event. Differentiation among the essays was accomplished on the basis of the distribution of verb tenses.
