It is pointed out that no experiment has properly evaluated the role of counterconditioning in systematic desensitization. It is argued that, despite claims to the contrary, the role of counterconditioning remains unclear. A previously unused but mandatory control “treatment” is described, and a particular approach to the problem of evaluating counterconditioning in systematic desensitization is briefly discussed.
