Abstract
Church members were grouped on the basis of responses to an appeal to participate in a questionnaire study of churches: Initial Ss (n = 58) attended the first session, Follow-up Ss (n = 29) participated when subsequent appeals were made, and Refusal Ss (n = 18) did not participate. Postcard responses to the appeal differed significantly for the 3 groups (p < .001), but sex of Ss did not. Group means of 6 behavioral measures on contributions to the church and church attendance showed an identical ordering effect: Initial Ss > Follow-up Ss > Refusal Ss. For all 6 measures, p < .05 for analyses of variance.
