Maultsby's (1968) attack on technical eclecticism confuses the art of psychotherapy with the science of psychological investigation. Theory-bound therapists are too inclined to subordinate observed facts to a priori assumptions. Technical eclecticism permits clinicians to apply empirically effective methods before scientists manage to identify the reasons for their effectiveness.
