Goldfried reports a cross-validation of a scale of items (the Marlowe-Crowne) intended to measure need for social approval. It proved feasible to rescore the scales of 3 samples of Ss using the Goldfried version of the instrument. The resulting correlations do not indicate that the Goldfried subset of items adds to the effectiveness of the instrument. Implications of the mode and state of development of the scale's validity for its use in various research settings are mentioned.
